To reach the station by boat from the Deer Harbor Marina on Orcas Island,
proceed 2.3 km (1.4 mi) SSW past the SW corner of Orcas Island, turn right and
proceed 8.0 km (5.0 mi) NNW to the south end of Waldron Island, then proceed 1.4
km (0.9 mi) NNE to the dock in Cowlitz Bay on Waldron Island.  The station is on
the dock and the bench marks are along the shore and the road to the dock.

The primary bench mark is a disk set flush in the top of a bedrock outcrop point
at the N end of the beach north of the county dock, 74.45 m (244.3 ft) NNW of
the base of the dock, 29.0 m (95.1 ft) NNE of western end of the outcrop point
at the approximate low tide line, 8.10 m (26.6 ft) SSW of the vegetation line at
the N end of the outcrop, and 2.40 m (7.9 ft) SE of the NW side of the outcrop.

The bench mark is a disk set in the S end of the concrete abutment at the base
of the dock, 8.58 m (28.1 ft) S of the N end of the concrete abutment, 4.11 m
(13.5 ft) W of the tree on the E side of road, 3.87 m (12.7 ft) ESE of the first
piling along the S side of the dock, 2.15 m (7.1 ft) W of the centerline of
Cowlitz Bay to Waldron Center Road, 0.65 m (2.1 ft) W of the E edge of the
abutment and 0.37 m (1.2 ft) E of the W edge of the concrete abutment.

The bench mark is a disk set in the base of a conglomerate bedrock face, 21.95 m
(72.0 ft) S of a 7.6 m (25.0 ft) tall sandstone rock outcrop point topped with
grass, 8.27 m (27.1 ft) N of 45 degree leaning tree at top of beach, 7.13 m
(23.4 ft) S of the N end of the bedrock face, 2.3 m (7.5 ft) below top of the
rock face and 0.3 m (1.0 ft) above beach.

The bench mark is an aluminum disk for San Juan Surveying Inc. and set flush in
a concrete monument on a vegetated slope below the Waldron Island post office
building, 13.10 m (43.0 ft) SSE of the center of the gate in the wooden fence
for the house on the NW side of the road, 11.75 m (38.5 ft) WNW of the front
door of the post office, 8.95 m (29.4 ft) SW of the NW corner of the post office
building, 4.95 m (16.2 ft) NW of the larger and southern of two madrona trees in
front of the post office, 4.25 m (13.9 ft) SE of the centerline of Cowlitz Bay
to Waldron Center Road and 0.7 m (2.3 ft) above road.

The bench mark a disk set flush in the top of a buried 1.5 m (5 ft) x 2 m (6 ft)
boulder near the southern end of the first field on the E side of Waldron Center
Road N of the dock, 60.17 m (197.4 ft) NNE of a large boulder at the corner of
Waldron Center Road and a driveway, 50.15 m (164.5 ft) E of the centerline of
Waldron Center Road, 14.36 m (47.1 ft) NW of the centerline of the driveway
along the S side of the field, 4.71 m (15.5 ft) WSW of the top of another buried
boulder and 0.30 m (1.0 ft) above ground.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
