To reach the tidal bench marks from the US Post Office at 451 N 1st St in
Kalama, proceed 0.4 km (0.3 mi) south on N 1st St to the intersection with Elm
St, turn right onto Elm St and proceed 0.1 km (0.1 mi) west to the entrance ramp
for I-5 South, turn left onto the entrance ramp and proceed south on I-5 3.0 km
(1.9 mi) to exit 27 toward Todd Rd/Port of Kalama, continue south 0.4 km (0.3
mi) on the exit ramp to the intersection with Robb Rd, turn right onto Robb Rd
proceed west 30 m (100 ft) to the T intersection with Dupont Rd, turn right onto
Dupont Rd and proceed north 0.3 km (0.2 mi) continuing as the road changes to
Port Road, continue onto Toteff Rd as the road turns to the west and proceed 0.3
km (0.2 mi) through two railroad crossings into the Temco Kalama facility,
continue north 0.9 km (0.6 mi) through the Temco Kalama facility to the grain
transfer dock at the north end of the facility. The bench marks are located from
the barge dock, along the access road to the south, and to the east side of the
I-5 exit 27 interchange. The tide gauge is located at the west end of the grain
transfer dock at the north end of the facility.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in a footing for a vertical support
structure for an overhead conveyor, 37.40 m (122.7 ft) WSW of the North face of
the grain storage tanks, 31.95 m (104.8 ft) SE of the SE corner of the footing
for the conveyor to the North, 22.56 m (74.0 ft) NW of the NE corner of the
concrete footing for the conveyor to the South, 13.35 m (43.8 ft) SW of the edge
of pavement, 0.39 m (1.3 ft) WSW of the East edge of the concrete footing and
0.20 m (0.7 ft) above grade.

The bench mark is a disk set in the retaining wall of a concrete landing at
North pier of the TEMCO Kalama facility, 19.87 m (65.2 ft) NW of the NE support
for the overhead conveyor to the South, 15.35 m (50.4 ft) SW of the SW corner of
a brick building, 8.65 m (28.4 ft) SSE of the SW support for the overhead
conveyor to the North, 6.05 m (19.8 ft) South of the NW corner of the landing,
0.91 m (3.0 ft) East of the SW corner of the landing and 0.80 m (2.6 ft) above
grade of the wall.

North, 22.36 m (73.4 ft) WSW of the East face of a grain storage tank marked
803, 12.65 m (41.5 ft) WSW of the edge of the pavement, 0.45 m (1.5 ft) WSW of
the East edge of the footing and 0.21 m (0.7 ft) above grade.

ft) SSE of the center of a guard rail post to the North, and 0.80 m (2.6 ft) NNE
of the NW corner of the footing pad.

The bench mark is a flange encased rod at the NW corner of the intersection of
Robb road and Todd road, 30.75 m (100.9 ft) WNW of a stop sign, 29.71 m (97.5
ft) NW of the I-5 entrance ramp sign, 20.25 m (66.4 ft) WSW of the edge of
pavement of Robb road, 15.95 m (52.3 ft) NE of the edge of pavement of the
northbound I-5 entrance ramp, 0.72 m (2.4 ft) West of a metal end post to a
barbed wire fence, and 0.71 m (2.3 ft) ESE of a witness post. The datum point is
set 0.2 cm (1 inch) below grade being the top of a stainless steel rod and
encased in a 5-inch national geodetic survey logo cover with kick block.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
