To reach the tidal bench marks from the drawbridge over South Slough in
Charleston, proceed west for 0.15 mile (0.24 km) to the first road on the right
(Boat Basin Drive), turn right (north) and continue for 0.25 mile (0.40 km) to
the road on the right (Kingfisher Drive), turn right (east) and continue for
0.25 mile (0.40 km) along the perimeter of the Charleston Boat Basin to the U.S.
Coast Guard boat house.  The bench marks are located on the U.S. Coast Guard
compound and in the vicinity of the boat basin.  The tide station is located in
a tool room in the NW corner of the boathouse.

The primary bench mark is set along the south side of the Guano Rock Boulevard,
just north of the Charleston Travel RV park, 137 feet (42 m) SE of the SE corner
of the blue, wooden Bay Area Hydraulics building, 46 feet (14 m) west of the
Heron Street/Guano Rock Boulevard street sign, 24.7 feet (7.5 m) south of the
centerline of Guano Rock Boulevard, and 7 feet (2 m) NE of a survey marker sign
lagged to a 3-foot (1 m) high fence post.  The bench mark is 0.3 foot (0.1 m)
below ground level, crimped to a galvanized steel rod driven 48 feet (15 m), and
encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe with a cover and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is set in the concrete curb adjacent to the sidewalk at the U.S.
Coast Guard station, 87 feet (26 m) north of a flagpole, 24.5 feet (7.5 m) south
of the north end of the curb, 12 feet (4 m) east of the NE corner of the
building, and 5.5 feet (1.7 m) NE of a water spigot on a red painted 2-inch
pipe.

at the Coos Bay Power Squadron Building along Guano Rock Boulevard, 47.5 feet
(14.5 m) south of the centerline of Guano Rock Boulevard, 12.5 feet (3.8 m)
north of the Power Squadron building, 2 feet (1 m) north of the flagpole, and 1
foot (0.3 m) south of the center of the north edge of the concrete base.

of the parking area south of the U.S. Coast Guard family housing building, 300
feet (91 m) NW of the NW corner of the Charleston Boat Basin, 51.5 feet (15.7 m)
north of a fire hydrant, 43.5 feet (13.3 m) east of the SE corner of the
building, and 6.5 feet (2.0 m) SW of the extended centerline of the asphalt road
east of the building.

supporting an oily waste water disposal pipe near the foot of the U.S. Coast

perpendicular to the boathouse dock, and 17 feet (5 m) south of the south edge
of the concrete slab at the foot of the dock.

Kingfisher Drive, and 1.6 feet (0.5 m) SW of a wooden witness post.  The bench
mark is 0.3 foot (0.1 m) below ground level, crimped to a galvanized steel rod
driven 48 feet (15 m), and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe with a cover and
concrete kickblock.

Charter Fishing Office, 125 feet (38 m) NE of utility pole #025400, 38.8 feet
(11.8 m) north of the centerline of Kingfisher Drive, and 4.7 feet (1.4 m) NE of
a metal survey marker nailed to a 3-foot (1 m) high fence post.  The bench mark
is 0.3 foot (0.1 m) below ground level, crimped to a galvanized steel rod driven
47 feet (14 m), and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe with a cover, and concrete
kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
