To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of County Park Road 53 and
County Park Road 22 on North Padre Island, proceed south on County Park Road 22
for 3.4 km (2.1 miles) to Padre Balli Park, turn left on the park entrance road
and proceed east for 0.64 km (0.4 mile), turn right on the beach road and follow
this road for approximately 0.5 km (0.3 mile) to Bob Hall Pier.  The bench marks
are at the entrance to the park, on the pier, and in the park compound.  The
tide gauge and electric tape gauge are on the NW corner of the pier.

The primary bench mark is NW of Bob Hall Pier, 6.4 m (21.0 feet) south of the
centerline of the park access road leading to Bob Hall Pier, 6.4 m (19.7 feet)
SE of the NE corner of the pavement of the parking lot for camping area #1, 3.0
m (9.8 feet) east of the entrance sign for campsite #1, and 7.0 m (23.0 feet)
north of a power pole with light.  The bench mark is crimped to a galvanized
steel rod driven 6.0 m (19 feet) to refusal, and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe
and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is set flush in the top of a concrete monument on the south side
of the entrance road to Padre Balli Park, in line with wooden posts, 30.9 m
(101.4 feet) WNW of the centerline of Elliff Road, 11.3 m (37.1 feet) NE of
power pole #5, 4.9 m (16.1 feet) SSW of the centerline of the entrance road, 3.5
m (11.5 feet) north of a wooden pole with a metal pipe and shield marking the
underground cable route, and level with the ground.

entrance road, 16.1 m (52.8 feet) north of the centerline of the road leading to
the beach, 14.3 m (47.0 feet) east of the centerline of the divider street
between the park entrance road and the park exit road, and 2.7 m (9.0 feet) east
of power pole #CPLG 880 SPP 440.  The bench mark is crimped to a galvanized
steel rod driven 4.9 m (16 feet) to refusal, and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe
and concrete kickblock.

crimped to a galvanized steel rod driven 5.8 m (19 feet) to refusal, and encased
in a 4-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

restrooms, 23.9 m (78.4 feet) east of an octogonal shaped bath house, 22.3 m
(73.2 feet) WNW of the centerline of the access road, 18.0 m (59.1 feet) NNW of
wooden light pole #32, and 0.8 m (2.6 feet) WSW of the SW corner of the concrete
block restrooms.  The bench mark is crimped to a stainless steel rod driven 17.1
m (56 feet) to refusal, encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock, and
level with the ground.

feet) south of the north face of the pier, and level with the pier.

exit road, 25.9 m (85.0 feet) south of power pole #185, 14.6 m (47.9 feet) NNE
of the centerline of the exit road, 0.7 m (2.2 feet) SSE of the NE corner of a
concrete block wall, and marked by a metal witness post.  The bench mark is
crimped to a stainless steel rod driven 14.0 m (46.0 feet) to refusal, encased
in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock, and level with the ground.

end of the campground, and 0.2 m (0.7 feet) above ground level.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
