To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of Beach Boulevard and U.S.
Highway A1A, proceed south on U.S. Highway A1A (3rd Street) for 0.6 km (0.4 mi)
to 6th Avenue South, then east on 6th Avenue South to its end at the
Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier.  The bench marks are along the seawall north of
the pier, along U.S. Highway A1A, and along Beach Boulevard east of Highway A1A.
 The tide gage and staff were on the west end of the pier.

The primary bench mark is a flange-encased rod located at the east end of 6th
Avenue South, 68.4 m (224.5 ft) east of the centerline of 1st Street South, 0.1
m (0.4 ft) north of a metal fence along the south boundary line of the
Jacksonville Beach Ocean Front Park property, 2.4 m (8.0 ft) SE of a City of
Jacksonville Beach storm sewer manhole, 0.3 m (1.0 ft) west of a 0.7 m (2.2 ft)
wide concrete seawall and 0.2 m (0.5 ft) NE of a carsonite witness post.  The
datum point is recessed (0.2 ft) below the level of the NOS logo cap, being the
top of a stainless steel rod, driven to refusal at a depth of 19.4 m (63.5 ft),
encased in a 5-inch NOS logo cap set flush with the ground.  NOTE:  A magnet was
buried at the south side of the mark.

The bench mark is a disk set in the top of a concrete monument flush with the
ground on the property of a high rise apartment building at the NE corner of the
intersection of State Road A1A (3rd Street South) and 2nd Avenue South, located
11.0 m (36.0 ft) north of the centerline of 2nd Avenue South, 3.1 m (10.2 ft)
east of the back edge of the curb of State Road A1A, 0.8 m (2.7 ft) east of the
east edge of the sidewalk along State Road A1A, 1.3 m (4.3 ft) north of the
north edge of the sidewalk along 2nd avenue south, 0.8 m (2.5 ft) NNE of an
18-inch concrete signal pole and 0.3 m (1.0 ft) west of a carsonite witness
post, and about 0.3 m (1.0 ft) above the level of the road.  NOTE:  A magnet was
buried at the south side of the mark.

X 4 ft) concrete catch basin which is 1.2 m (4.0 ft) deep and has an iron grate,
located at the intersection of State Road A1A (3rd Street South) and 11th Avenue
South, 14.0 m (46.0 ft) east of the centerline of northbound State Road A1A, 5.4
m (17.7 ft) east of the east edge of a 1.5 m (4.9 ft) wide concrete sidewalk
along the east side of SR A1A (3rd Street South), 8.7 m (28.5 ft) north of the
centerline of 11th Avenue South, and about level with the highway.

seawall, located 8.7 m (28.5 ft) south of the centerline of Beach Boulevard,
11.6 m (38.1 ft) east of the southern projection of the east face of the Red
Cross building, 6.3 m (20.7 ft) north of and level with the south edge of a 1.5
m (4.9 ft) wide concrete sidewalk along the south side of Beach Boulevard, 0.6 m
(2.0 ft) SSW of the NE corner of the seawall and is across the road from the
American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corp. building.

The bench mark is a disk set in a 0.8 m (2.5 ft) wide concrete seawall at the
east end of 3rd Avenue South, located 10.6 m (34.7 ft) south of the SE corner of
a 1.8 m (6.0 ft) vinyl privacy fence along the north right-of-way of 3rd Avenue
South, 8.7 m (28.4 ft) east of the east end of the road, 5.5 m (18.0 ft) north
of the north edge of a 1.5 m (5.0 ft) wide wooden bridge that is a dune
crossing, 2.7 m (9.0 ft) north of the steps leading from 3rd Avenue South to the
beach, 1.5 m (5.0 ft) north of the easterly projection of the centerline of 3rd
Avenue South and 0.4 m (1.2 ft) west of the east edge of the seawall.

Highway A1A from the junction of U.S. Highway 90 at Jacksonville Beach, near the
SW corner of a high hurricane type fence around a large elevated water tank,
31.1 m (102.0 ft) east of the center line of the northbound lane of the highway,
31.4 m (103.0 ft) north of the center line of 22nd Avenue South, 0.5 m (1.5 ft)
north of the SW corner fence post of a high fence, 0.2 m (0.6 ft) west of the
fence line and 0.5 m (1.5 ft) south of a metal witness post, and projecting 5.1
cm (2.0 in) above the level of the ground.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
