To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 (Main
Street) and Lawnton Avenue in Jacksonville, proceed SE on Lawnton Avenue for 0.8
km (0.5 mi) to Buffalo Avenue, then turn right and proceed south on Buffalo
Avenue for 0.2 km (0.1 mi) to Virginia Street, then turn left and proceed east
on Virginia Street for 0.3 km (0.2 mi) to Evergreen Avenue, then turn right and
proceed south on Evergreen Avenue for 0.2 km (0.1 mi) to a drive leading east
into the U.S. Coast Guard Training Facility.  The bench marks are on the Coast
Guard property and along U.S. Highway 17.  The tide gage and staff were located
on the dock and piling of the Coast Guard property.

The primary bench mark is a disk located at 6935 Evergreen Avenue, 16.6 m (54.5
ft) south of a 1.0 m (3.0 ft) diameter oak tree, 9.9 m (32.5 ft) east of the
centerline of Evergreen Avenue, 7.2 m (23.5 ft) north of the centerline of a
driveway, and 0.5 m (1.5 ft) west of a witness post.  The bench mark is set at
ground level, crimped to the top of a copper-clad steel rod, driven to refusal
at a depth of 12.8 m (42.0 ft), encased in a PVC pipe projecting 0.3 m (1.0 ft)
above ground level and a concrete kickblock.

spanning trout river, 10.6 km (6.6 mi) north along seaboard air line railway
from the station at Jacksonville, 8.2 km (5.1 mi) south along the railway from
the school at Oceanway, 4.4 km (2.7 mi) northerly along U.S. Highway 17 (North
Main Street) from the junction of U.S. Highway 1 Alternate in Jacksonville, 0.2
km (0.1 mi) north of milepost #629, , 47.0 m (154.2 ft) west of the centerline
of the southbound lanes of the highway 30.0 m (100.0 ft) SW of a carsonite
witness post, 1.3 m (4.3 ft) east of the near rail, 1.3 m (4.3 ft) below the
level of the track.

centerline of Oakwood Street, 13.4 m (44.0 ft) east of the east rail of the
track, 10.2 m (33.5 ft) north of the centerline of 65th Street, 0.5 m (1.5 ft)
south of a witness post, 0.2 m (0.5 ft) above ground level, and 1.2 m (4.0 ft)
above track level.

The bench mark is a stainless steel rod located 9.8 m (32.0 ft) Southwest of the
centerline of Virginia Street, 5.6 m (18.5 ft) east of the centerline of Edge
Street, 2.7 m (9.0 ft) SE of the center of an iron catch basin grate, 0.4 m (1.3
ft) west of a 1.1 m (3.5 ft) high chain link fence and 0.3 m (1.0 ft) west of a
carsonite witness post.  The datum point is recessed 0.1 m (0.3 ft) below the
level of the NGS logo cap, being the top of a stainless steel rod,  driven to
refusal at a depth of 14.0 m (46.0 ft) encased in a NGS logo cap flush with the
ground and about 0.2 m (0.5 ft) above the level of Edge Street.  NOTE:  A magnet
was placed inside of the NGS logo cap.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
