To reach the tidal bench marks from the junction of State Road A1A (State Road
200) Sadler Road (Nassau County) and Bonnieview Road in Fernandina Beach, go
south and west on SR A1A for 2.4 km (1.5 mi) to the bridge over Kingsley Creek
(Amelia River).  The bench marks are located on both sides of Kingsley Creek
adjacent to the highway and CSX railroad. The tide gage and staff were located
in the canal off the west side of Kingsley Creek.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in a 10-inch diameter terra cotta pipe
filled with concrete, about 1.98 m (6.5 ft) below track level and flush with the
ground, 32.31 m (106.0 ft) SW of the SW abutment for the railroad bridge over
Kingsley Creek, 8.08 m (26.5 ft) SE of the SE rail, 6.04 m (19.8 ft) SW of a
stop sign located 3.96 m (13.0 ft) SE of the SE rail, 1.5 m (0.5 ft) north or
carsonite witness post, and 0.3 m (1 ft) south of a 4" X 4" wooden post.

rail, and 1.7 m (5.6 ft) below the level of the track 5.8 km (3.6 mi) southerly
along state Highway A1A from the intersection of Centre Street in Fernandina
Beach, thence 0.8 km (0.5 mi) westerly along the CSX Transportation Railroad.

Island Road, 22.5 m (73.8 ft) NE of the road center, 15.2 m (49.9 ft) NW of the

witness post.

The bench mark is a disk located 225 km (1.4 mi) SW of Fernandina Beach, 15.6 m
(51.3 ft) NNW of the north rail of the CSX railroad, 14.63 m (48.0 ft) east of
the centerline of the Yacht Basin entrance road, 0.98 m (3.2 ft) north of a
6-foot chain link fence, 19.32 m (63.4 ft) WSW of a 1-foot diameter wood utility
pole, 2.8 m (9.2 ft) east of the westernmost yacht basin wood sign post, 2.4 m
(7.9 ft) west of the easternmost wood sign post and 1.5 m (0.5 ft) north of a
metal witness post.  The bench mark is recessed 0.67 m (2.2 ft) below ground
level, crimped to the top of a rod driven into the ground and encased in a
4-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.      NOTE:  A magnet was buried at the
south side of the mark.

tower, located 6.598 km (4.1 mi) SW from Fernandina Beach, at the State Road A1A
bridge over Kingsley Creek (Intracoastal Waterway), on the west side of the
creek, set in the south corner of the south concrete foot for an electrical
transmission tower (first tower west of creek), 31.39 m (103.0 ft) south of the
centerline of the south span of A1A, and 35.66 m (117.0 ft) SSW of the round
southern bridge pile, 21.34 m (70.0 ft) west of the shoreline of Kingsley Creek
and located 17.07 m (56.0 ft) west of the west shoreline of Kingsley Creek.

of the State Road A1A (State Road 200) bridge over Kingsley Creek (Amelia
River), 7.2 m (23.6 ft) NW of the centerline of the westbound lanes of the
highway, 2.2 m (7.2 ft) SW of the NE end of the bridge guard rail, 0.2 m (0.7
ft) NE of the SW end of the bridge abutment and 0.92 m (3 ft) above the level of
the highway.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
