To reach the tidal bench marks from the Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge in
Beaufort, proceed east on U.S. Highway 21 for 19 km (12 mi) to the intersection
with County Road S-7-77 (Seaside Road), then turn right and proceed SW on
Seaside Road for 16 km (10 mi) to a sand drive on the left, then turn left and
proceed east along the sand drive for 0.3 km (0.2 mi) to the Sanders residence
and the boat house.  The bench marks are located along Station Creek near the
the pier and extend west toward a grove of pine trees.  The tide station was
located inside the boat house on the pier.

The primary bench mark is a disk located at the end of the pier near a utility
pole, 52 m (172 ft) SE of bench mark 8601 B 1977, 26.67 m (87.5 ft) SSW of
utility pole #228296, 12.92 m (42.4 ft) NE of the centerline of the end of the
pier, 5.24 m (17.2 ft) SSE of the SE corner of a green wood pumphouse, and 2.99
m (9.8 ft) NNE of the edge of the marsh.  The bench mark is set at ground level,
crimped to the top of a galvanized steel rod driven 10.7 m (35 ft) to refusal,
encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.  NOTE: The mark was not found by
US Power Squadron in 2002.

The bench mark is a disk set flush in the top of a concrete monument near a
small house west of the dirt driveway leading to the boathouse and creek, 42.37
m (139.0 ft) west of utility pole #228296, 9.78 m (32.1 ft) SW of the centerline
of the dirt driveway leading from State Road S-7-77, 5.52 m (18.1 ft) NE of a
large propane tank, 0.49 m (1.6 ft) east of the SE corner of a small green
concrete-block house, and at ground level.

The bench mark is a disk located in front of a white brick house at the edge of
the marsh, 66 m (215 ft) east of bench mark 8601 D 1977, 30.02 m (98.5 ft) SE of
the SE corner of the white brick house, 25.76 m (84.5 ft) east of a 0.46 m (1.5
ft) diameter pine tree, 8.47 m (27.8 ft) south of a 0.46 m (1.5 ft) diameter oak
tree, and 1.89 m (6.2 ft) NNW of the edge of the marsh.  The bench mark is set
at ground level, crimped to the top of a galvanized steel rod driven 10.7 m (35
ft) to refusal, encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

of the marsh, 58 m (190 ft) east of Bench Mark 8601 E 1977, 35.33 m (115.9 ft)
SW of the SW corner of the white brick house, 13.56 m (44.5 ft) SW of a 0.3 m (1
ft) diameter magnolia tree, 2.93 m (9.6 ft) NNW of the edge of the marsh, 1.10 m
(3.6 ft) west of a 0.3 m (1 ft) diameter hardwood tree, and at ground level.

The bench mark is a disk located near the marsh, 61.30 m (201.0 ft) WSW of the
entrance end of a wooden dock, 44.45 m (146.5 ft) south of a 0.61 m (2.0 ft)
diameter weeping willow tree, 5.03 m (16.5 ft) SW of a 0.46 m (1.5 ft) diameter
pine tree, 5 m (16 ft) east of a 0.46 m (1.5 ft) diameter pine tree, 3.35 m
(11.0 ft) NW of the edge of the marsh, and 2.13 m (7.0 ft) north of the 0.91 m
(3.0 ft) high bank at the marsh edge.  The bench mark is set at ground level,
crimped to the top of a galvanized steel rod driven 6 m (21 ft) to refusal,
encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
