To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of County Roads S-8-98 and
S-8-33 (Clements Ferry Road) in Wando, proceed SW on Clements Ferry Road for 9.2
km (5.7 mi) to the entrance of Rebellion Farms, then turn left and continue on
the dirt drive for 0.8 km (0.5 mi) to a boat house and pier.  The bench marks
are along the dirt drive.  The tide gage and staff were at the SW end of the
pier.

The primary bench mark is a disk located near the boat house, 42.46 m (139.3 ft)
ESE of bench mark 4701 F 1982, 13.72 m (45.0 ft) ENE of a lone 1 m (4 ft)
diameter pine tree, 11.52 m (37.8 ft) WSW of the SW corner of the boat house,
and 1.34 m (4.4 ft) SSW of the SW corner of a concrete apron in front of the
boat house.  The bench mark is set level with the ground, crimped to the top of
a galvanized steel rod driven an unspecified depth to refusal, and encased in a
PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

building (stables), 19.66 m (64.5 ft) ESE of the west corner of the stables,
19.08 m (62.6 ft) east of a lone 0.91 m (3.0 ft) diameter oak tree, 17.56 m
(57.6 ft) NE of the center line of the dirt drive, and 1.10 m (3.6 ft) SW of the
south corner of the stables.  The bench mark is set level with the ground,
crimped to the top of a galvanized steel rod driven an unspecified depth to
refusal, and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located near a power pole west of the stables, 51.21 m
(168.0 ft) west of bench mark 4701 G 1982, 46.45 m (152.4 ft) west of the west
corner of the stables, 5.27 m (17.3 ft) NE of the centerline of the dirt drive,
5.18 m (17.0 ft) WSW of a 1 m (2 ft) diameter pine tree, and 1.74 m (5.7 ft) SSE
of power pole #41737.  The bench mark is set level with the ground, crimped to
the top of a galvanized steel rod driven an unspecified depth to refusal, and
encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located near a water tank on the north side of a cinder
block house, 72.33 m (237.3 ft) SE of bench mark 4701 C 1977, 30.18 m (99.0 ft)
west of a lone 1 m (4 ft) diameter pine tree, 23.04 m (75.6 ft) ENE of a lone
2.53 m (8.3 ft) diameter oak tree in the center of a circle drive, 6.95 m (22.8
ft) north of the NE corner of the cinder block house, and 1.01 m (3.3 ft) NNE of
the north face of the water tank.  The bench mark is set level with the ground,
crimped to the top of a stainless steel rod driven 12.2 m (40 ft) to refusal,
and encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located near the north corner of the stables, 78.64 m
(258.0 ft) SSW of the SW corner of a trailer house that is permanently parked,
33.95 m (111.4) NNE of the centerline of the main road on the farm, 22.56 m
(74.0 ft) ESE of the center of the gate for a large paddock area, 5.88 m (19.3
ft) ENE of the center of the stables, 3.11 m (10.2 ft) SW of the north corner of
a 2 m (6 ft) high chain link fence on the NE side of the stables, and 0.70 m
(2.3 ft) WSW of the north corner of the stables.  The bench mark is set level
with the ground, crimped to the top of a stainless steel rod driven 8.5 m (28
ft) to refusal, and encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
