To reach the tidal bench marks from the Post Office at Frisco, proceed south
along State Highway 12 for 1.4 km (0.9 mi), thence 0.2 km (0.1 mi) SE along a
paved road leading to the Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier and Surf and Sound
Campground.  The bench marks are around the fishing pier parking lot and the
campground area.  The tide gage and staff are 6 m (20 ft) north of the offshore
end of the fishing pier.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in the top of a concrete monument in the
Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier asphalt parking lot, 19 m (62 ft) west of the NW end
of the SW handrail for the board walkway to the pier, 17 m (57 ft) west of a
street light pole,  7 m (22 ft) SW of the centerline of the road, and 3.17 m
(10.4 ft) SE of the north side of the parking lot.

intersection of State Highway 12 and the entrance road to Cape Hatteras Fishing
Pier, 14.9 m (49 ft) SE of the centerline of State Highway 12, 7.50 m (24.6 ft)
north of the center of a concrete drive of the first house on the road leading
to the pier, 6.7 m (22 ft) NE of the center of the paved road leading SE to the
pier, 0.3 m (1 ft) SW of a power line pole with a metal witness post, and 0.09 m
(0.3 ft) below ground level.

of Bench Mark NO 1 1973, 4.70 m (15.4 ft) SE of the southeasterly-most power
pole on the west side of the road, 3.99 m (13.1 ft) west of the centerline of
the road leading to the pier, 2.40 m (7.9 ft) east of the SE corner of a wood
fence around a residence, 0.15 m (0.5 ft) south of a 4x4-inch witness post, and
0.45 m (1.5 ft) below ground level.

The bench mark is a disk located near the NE corner of the parking lot for the
Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier, 63.09 m (207.0 ft) NE of the center of the paved
road leading to the pier, 37.95 m (124.5 ft) south of the SE corner of a 3-story
house which is directly behind the mark, 2.13 m (7.0 ft) north of the NE corner
of the parking lot, 0.30 m (1.0 ft) south of a 4x4-inch wooden post with witness
sign, and 1.22 m (4.0 ft) below the top of the witness post.  The bench mark is
crimped to the top of a galvanized steel rod driven 12.2 m (40 ft) to refusal,
and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located north of the parking lot for the Cape Hatteras
Fishing Pier, in front of the third house east of the end of the road at 54099
Marlin Court, 46.63 m (153.0 ft) east of the west end of the road, and 4.48 m
(14.7 ft) west of the center of the driveway to the house, and 4.6 m (15 ft)
south of the center of the paved road.  The bench mark is crimped to the top of
a galvanized steel rod driven 12.2 m (40 ft) to refusal, and encased in a 5-inch
logo cap.

ESE of a red fire hydrant, and 0.70 m (2.3 ft) south of a power pole.  The bench
mark is at ground level, crimped to the top of a stainless steel rod driven 11.0
m (36 ft) to refusal, and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a flange-encased rod located approximately on the south side
of a feeder road at the Surf and Sound Community, 152.4 m (500 ft) west of the
road leading to the Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier, 46.33 m (152.0 ft) NE of the NE
corner of a 3-story beach house named Wave Rider, 42.37 m (139.0 ft) west of a
power pole with transformer, 25.66 m (84.2 ft) south of Highway 12, 3.69 m (12.1
ft) east of a power pole with transformer, and 0.43 m (1.4 ft) north of a NOAA
witness sign.  The datum point is at ground level, being the top of a stainless
steel rod driven 18.3 m (60 ft) to refusal and encased in a sleeve and 5-inch
logo cap.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
