To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of U.S. Highway 9 and Great
Bay Boulevard in Tuckerton, proceed 11.1 km (6.9 mi) south along Great Bay
Boulevard to the former Little Egg Harbor Coast Guard Station, then proceed 0.5
km (0.3 mi) SW along a wooden walkway to the Coast Guard Station.  The bench
marks are located along Great Bay Boulevard.  The tide gage and staff were
located on the Rutgers University Pier.

The primary bench mark is a disk crimped to the top of a copper-clad steel rod
set in the tall grass along the east side of the Great Bay Boulevard, 16.85 m
(55.3 ft) ENE of utility pole 18944, 14.55 m (47.7 ft) ESE of a New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection sign, 5.40 m (17.7 ft) east of the
centerline of Great Bay Boulevard, 0.47 m (1.5 ft) west of a metal witness post
with New Jersey Geodetic Survey sign. The bench mark is set 4 cm (0.1 ft) below
grade, crimped to a copper-clad steel rod driven 15.2 m (50 ft), and encased in
4-inch PVC pipe with concrete kickblock.

(29.6 ft) west of the centerline of Great Bay Boulevard, 3.47 m (11.4 ft) WSW of
a yellow metal Bell Systems underground telephone cable sign, and 0.31 m (1.0
ft) ENE of a metal New Jersey Geodetic Survey .

The bench mark is a disk set in top of the SE of three 3.34 m x 3.34 m (10.9 ft
x 10.9 ft) concrete footings formally supporting a USCG communication tower
(tower removed) on a peninsula west of the Rutgers University Marine Field
Station, 9.88 m (32.4 ft) ESE of center of westernmost footing, 8.77 m (28.7 ft)
south of the center of northernmost footing, 1.53 m (5.0 ft) east of the center
of SE footing, 0.80 m (2.6 ft) west of the east corner of the SE footing, and
0.95 m (3.1 ft) above the approximate high water line.

the tall grass and brush along the east side of Great Bay Boulevard opposite the
wooden walkway to the Rutgers University Marine Field Station, 15.67 m (51.4 ft)
east of the centerline of the start of the boardwalk, 5.50 m (18.0 ft) east of
the centerline of the Great Bay Boulevard, 1.70 m (5.6 ft) SSE of utility pole
T6119, and 0.33 m (1.1 ft) west of a carsonite witness post. The bench mark is
crimped to a copper-clad steel rod driven 15.2 m (50 ft), and encased in 4-inch
PVC pipe with concrete kickblock.

x 10.9 ft) concrete footings formally supporting a USCG communication tower
(tower removed) on a peninsula west of the Rutgers University Marine Field
Station, 8.50 m (27.9 ft) NE of the center of the west most tower footing, 8.14
m (26.7 ft) north of the center of the SE footing, 0.53 m (1.7 ft) SSW of the
center of the northernmost concrete footing, and 0.80 m (2.6 ft) above grade.

ft) SW of the SW fence corner of the utility lot north of the ramp, 7.43 m (24.4
ft) NE of the SW corner of the barge ramp, and 2.46 m (8.1 ft) ESE of a sheet
pile seawall.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
