To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of Patten Avenue and
Florence Avenue in North Long Branch, proceed 0.5 mile (0.8 km) on Patten Avenue
to its intersection with Renwick Place, then 0.1 mile (0.2 km) west on Renwick
Place to the Patten Avenue Marina.  The bench marks are in the vicinity of the
Patten Point Yacht Club on Renwick Place.  The tide gage and staff were on a
wooden bulkhead, on the north side of the first small pier north of a large
T-shaped pier.

The bench mark is at the western end of Renwick Place near the Patten Avenue
Marina, 21.3 feet (6.5 m) SW of the NW corner of the 1-story marina office
building, 14.3 feet (4.4 m) east of the end of a chain link fence, 12.3 feet
(3.7 m) SW of the bulkhead, and 7.5 feet (2.3 m) NW of the SW corner of the
building.  The bench mark is set 0.2 foot (0.1 m) below ground level, and
crimped to a copper-clad steel rod driven 24 feet (7 m) to refusal.

The bench mark is 500 feet (152 m) NE of Bench Mark 1942 A 1976, 25.0 feet (7.6
m) north of the centerline of Renwick Place, 24.0 feet (7.3 m) east of the
centerline of the road leading to the Long Branch Ice Boat and Yacht Club, 12.9
feet (3.9 m) east of the SE corner of a stone and concrete post, 7.4 feet (2.3
m) NE of the water meter, and 6.7 feet (2.0 m) NW of the fire hydrant.  The
bench mark is set 0.2 foot (0.1 m) below ground level, and crimped to a
copper-clad steel rod driven 28 feet (8 m) to refusal.

The bench mark is set in the top of the SW corner of a 4-foot (1 m) concrete
base of a boat launching crane, 300 feet (91 m) NE of Bench Mark 1942 B 1976,
48.1 feet (14.7 m) north of the corner of the loading ramp, 45.3 feet (13.8 m)
east of the SE corner of the 1-story concrete marina building, 18.2 feet (5.5 m)
SE of the inside corner of the bulkhead, 7.8 feet (2.4 m) SW of the outside
corner of the bulkhead, and 3.1 feet (0.9 m) above the ground.

The bench mark is set in the top of the north concrete rim of the swimming pool
at the Patten Point Yacht Club, 250 feet (76 m) SE of Bench Mark 1942 C 1976,
61.5 feet (18.7 m) west of the tree at the center of the circular driveway at
the club, 43.8 feet (13.4 m) SE of the NW corner of the pool, and 34.5 feet
(10.5 m) SW of the NE corner of the concrete pavement surrounding the pool.

(25.6 m) NW of the NE corner of the 2-story Yacht Club building, 20.3 feet (6.2
m) south of the bulkhead, and 3.9 feet (1.2 m) south of the flagpole.  The bench
mark is set 0.2 foot (0.1 m) below ground level, and crimped to a copper-clad
steel rod driven 30 feet (9 m) to refusal.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
