To reach the tidal bench marks from the State Street underpass at the Outer
Bridge at Perth Amboy, proceed 2.7 km (1.7 mi) north along State Street to where
the bridge over the New York and Long Beach Railroad tracks.  The bench marks
are north and northeast of the C.P. Chemical plant wharf.  The tide gage and
staff were on the C.P. Chemical plant wharf on the east side of Woodbridge
Creek.

The primary bench mark is a disk set vertically in the north face of a two story
concrete brick and metal building at the C.P. Chemical plant grounds, 122 m (400
ft) NE of Woodbridge Creek, 27.19 m (89.2 ft) SW of the SW corner of a 2-story
brick and stucco building immediately to the NE, 25.45 m (83.5 ft) SW of a fire
hydrant, 15.36 m (50.4 ft) SW from the most northerly corner of the building, 12
m (39 ft) south of utility pole #ER 50, and 0.91 m (3.0 ft) above ground.

The bench mark is a disk set in the NE end of the State Street overpass over the
New York and Long Beach railroad, 2.6 km (1.6 mi) north along State Street from
its underpass under the Outer Bridge at Perth Amboy, 9 m (30 ft) east of the
centerline of the street, and 1.22 m (4.0 ft) below street level.

The bench mark is a disk set horizontally in the top of a 0.40 m (1.3 ft) wide
concrete wall, along the double tracks next to the guard house, at the C.P.
Chemical plant grounds, 22.74 m (74.6 ft) west of the north corner of the guard
house, 2.50 m (8.2 ft) SE of the most northerly track rail, and 2.29 m (7.5 ft)
NW of an utility pole.

The bench mark is a disk located 0.3 km (0.2 mi) south along West Avenue from
its intersection with Woodbridge Avenue, 122 m (400 ft) west along Arbor Street,
23.93 m (78.5 ft) west of a fire hydrant, 22.31 m (73.2 ft) south of the SE
corner of the 2-story building at 29 Arbor Street, and 2.23 m (7.3 ft) north of
a chain link fence around the Shell Oil Tank farm.  The bench mark is set 6 cm
(0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a copper-clad steel rod
driven 15.2 m (50 ft), and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located 0.3 km (0.2 mi) south along West Avenue from
its intersection with Woodbridge Avenue, 76 m (250 ft) north of the State Street
bridge over the New York and Long Beach railroad, 13.90 m (45.6 ft) SW of a fire
hydrant, 10.15 m (33.3 ft) south of utility pole #28 WB, 4.51 m (14.8 ft) east
of the east curb of State Street, and 2.50 m (8.2 ft) west of the west curb of
West Avenue.  The bench mark is set 0.30 m (1.0 ft) below ground level, crimped
to the top of a copper-clad steel rod, and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete
kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located in a park at the intersection of Woodbridge
Avenue and West Avenue, 3.1 km (1.9 mi) north along State Street from the State
Street underpass at the Outer Bridge, 19.69 m (64.6 ft) SW of utility pole #BP
3481, 9.27 m (30.4 ft) east of the east curb of Old Road, 8.96 m (29.4 ft) west
of the west curb of West Avenue and 4.72 m (15.5 ft) south of a flagpole.  The
bench mark is set 6 cm (0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a
copper-clad steel rod driven 6.4 m (21 ft) to refusal, and encased in a PVC pipe
and concrete kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
